The Muddy River Counselors push past the Scott County Flames 55-44 in Carthage to win their first ever MSAHA game.
The Flames began the game off welcoming the Counselors to the conference by jumping to a 4-0 lead. The Counselors bounced back taking their first lead of the game on a Luke Sanders (#10) three pointer to take a 7-4 lead. The Counselors went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-4 lead before the Flames clawed back in after outrebounding the Counselors on consecutive possessions. By halftime, Muddy River’s lead had shrinked to 5, leading 21-16.
The second half started with a driving layup by Chris Purnell (#5), followed by a Sun Michael Williams (#45) three pointer, and capped off by a King Williams (#30) and-1. This gave the Counselors a 28-16 lead, and they never looked back. Chris Purnell and King Williams each had 10 points. Purnell and William Leach (#24) each had 3 blocks, Caleb Sanders pulled down nine rebounds yet again and Sun Michael Williams had a field day: scoring 27 points on 6-13 shooting from three-point land. This was a much improvement from his 1 for 11 performance against Discovery.
The Counselors looked sharp, and it proved to be too much for Scott County, who missed many shots at the basket that would have pulled them tighter in the game.
This marks the first conference win for the Muddy River Counselors (1-1)[1-0]. The Scott County Flames (1-1)[0-1] will continue their quest for their first conference win of the season. The teams will face off again with Muddy River hosting on January 26.
