The Mike Vrabel Scandal is Just the Classic Proverbs 5 Scenario

When we read Proverbs 5, men are warned of the adulterous woman: her lips drip honey, her speech is smoother than oil. But her feet lead to death. Her steps take hold of Sheol. She does not ponder the path of life. Her ways are unstable. Keep away from her.

These are words that New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel surely wishes he had heeded. The Pats coach is facing a scandal where it appears that, at the very least, he has had an inappropriate relationship with a reporter by the name of Dianna Russini. Both Vrabel and Russini are married. Russini, 43, has worked for several outlets, including ESPN, but most recently worked for The Athletic, where she resigned on April 14 amidst this scandal.

This story broke on April 7 when pictures were posted by a gossip publication showing Vrabel and Russini lounging alone and holding hands. Considering each’s marital status, this became big news. On one hand, there is the coach of the New England Patriots, who were just in the Super Bowl after an unbelievable one-season turnaround from a 4–13 record to a 14–3 finish. Now, he is being exposed for a major lack of personal integrity. On the other hand, you have a reporter in Russini who seems to be actively violating journalism ethics with this relationship while also being married.

Russini has shown her hand in the past as far as her character is concerned. She has been on the record downing her husband and joking about him on national television, calling him “average.” Seeing what we see now is not quite that shocking.

Mike Vrabel, 50, has been married for 27 years. His life is rocked by these revelations. Obviously, there is no proof that it is 100% adultery, but it is clearly at a point that is not only inappropriate but also sinful and a violation of trust in a marriage. To Vrabel’s credit, he is not cavalier about this. He has shown shame, evident in his press conference where he mentioned “tough conversations” that he has had to have—not quite an admission, but pretty close.

The big question now is, “Will Vrabel remain the head coach of the New England Patriots?” I think the answer lies in the coach’s ability to focus on the team and continue to lead them toward success. The owner of the Patriots is Robert Kraft. He has proven to be an amoral man. His goal is to find the most effective coach possible. Character is not too relevant in regard to his selection of coaches and players (i.e., Aaron Hernandez).

This is why Vrabel has not been pushed out yet. He just led the Patriots to the Super Bowl in his first year at the helm. He did an amazing job coaching the team. He was a great coach with the Tennessee Titans as well, leading them to the AFC title game in 2019 and having multiple other successful seasons in Nashville. He is a proven winner, both as a player and as a coach. He won three Super Bowl titles as a player with the New England Patriots.

There is no reason to move on from Mike Vrabel other than this scandal. I do not believe that this situation will get him out of New England unless he allows it to affect the way he coaches. That brings us to the next question: Will it affect his effectiveness as a coach? I do believe so. Vrabel appears shaken by this situation; he looks embarrassed. Again, he has been married for 27 years. That is not dabbling. He has been married longer than I have been alive. I also believe that the players will not respect him to the same level. When you lack integrity, respect is a lot harder to find. I believe he is not going to be able to command the same respect he once did.

Of course, just as anytime a scandal like this hits, feminists are out complaining that the woman is taking more heat than the man. I would disagree. Russini is not taking more heat than Vrabel. Russini did lose her job, but most football fans did not know nor care who she was, while any knowledgeable NFL fan knows who the coach of a Super Bowl team is. Mike Vrabel is the reason any of us know this story. The reason why Russini lost her job and Vrabel hasn’t is because of replaceability. Russini is easily replaceable, while Vrabel is replaceable but not as easily. If the Patriots move on from Vrabel, they will have to find a very good coach who will take them to the same heights. Mike Vrabel set the bar high for a future coach.

Though we do not know how this will pan out, we do know that the Patriots’ coach would have done well to have heeded the warnings from Proverbs. Her feet lead to death, and Vrabel is experiencing that now.
