There are two outcomes to taking a huge loss during a season.
Well, let me rephrase that: there are two ways that you can react.
You can choose to recognize your mistakes and work toward improving them, or you can point fingers, blame uncontrollable circumstances, and refuse to recognize any mistakes because it puts you into a boxing match with your ego.
Everything in life is cause and effect, and if you choose the latter option, you can pretty much kiss your potential goodbye. No winning team has that kind of mindset.
However, even if you have a good mindset majority of the time, it could start to falter when you go from beating teams by 50 to losing by that same margin.
That kind of switch in dominance makes you start to question yourself, and if those feelings aren’t put to the right use, it could spell disaster for your season.
What I’m curious to see is if the Counselors will battle through their losses or begin to crumble under the pressure of the emotional damage these kinds of defeats can bring.
Muddy River seems to be playing the most games against private school teams this season in relation to other MSAHA teams.
Going up against MAIS schools as a homeschool organization is, and always will be, tough. An extra two or three days of practice per week as a team makes a substantial difference in a team’s success.
Any team going up against a team with that big of an advantage shouldn’t be too hard on themselves if they end up taking the loss.
Muddy River has a couple of conference games coming up, but then they go back into the MAIS to play against Hartfield Academy.
These tough games will either benefit or break them as a team, but we’ll just have to wait and watch it all unfold as we continue this 2023-2024 basketball season.
