[RAYMOND, MS] The Muddy River Counselors defeated the Hillcrest Christian Cougars at home by a score of 74-63 to get a big non-conference win over a notable school in the Jackson area.
The game started with the Cougars going up 4-0 on two buckets. The Counselors then awakened and hit five three pointers from Luke Sanders, Rydell Breakfield, and Caleb Sanders en route to a 15-6 lead which led to a 25-6 lead to end the first quarter.
The Counselors stayed steady in the second quarter but the Cougars showed resistance. Hillcrest won the second quarter 21-17 to cut the lead to a 42-27 halftime deficit.
The Counselors exploded in the third quarter, taking a 60-33 lead in the third period. The Counselors finished the quarter up 62-37.
The fourth quarter was won by Hillcrest as Ethan Battle was able to finish with 17 points on multiple 3-point field goals in the last period. This made the score prettier but Muddy River prevailed, winning 74-63.
Luke Sanders led the Counselors with 24 points, which is a career high for him. He had 5 three pointers on the way. Caleb Sanders finished with 19 points and Rydell Breakfield had another solid performance with 15.
Hillcrest came in with their 6’8″ J.D. Jenkins and 6’7″ Jordan Johnson. With the tallest Counselors player standing at 6’1″, Muddy River had their work cut out for them. They got the job done on defense as they were able to disrupt the Cougars’ post passing.
The Muddy River Counselors (2-1)[1-1] will face the Little Rock Flames at 10:30 AM on Friday morning. The Hillcrest Christian Cougars (1-2) will head to Adams County Christian on Tuesday, November 15.
