Counselor Beat: Short Handed Counselors Struggle to Keep Up with No. 1 PCA Paladins 66-84

[Raymond, MS] The PCA Paladins defeated the Muddy River Counselors 84-66 Saturday morning in Raymond.

The day started with the match of the top two seeds in 16U boys basketball. The PCA Paladins took the win and defeated the previously undefeated Muddy River Counselors 36-26.

At the beginning of the 18U boys contest, the game was high-powered. King Williams had it going early, scoring 8 points in the first four minutes. The Paladins held a 23-19 lead after the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter it was more of the same. It was a close contest with the score at 33-31 PCA in the lead with 90 seconds to play in the first half. Right at that point, two threes from Drew Boggs and buckets from Colyn Ericksen and Tate Boggs ended the half with PCA up 10, 43-33. The second half belonged to PCA. They maintained their lead and extended it. By the end, they secured an 18-point 84-66 win.

Though they lost, the Muddy River Counselors had a solid performance. Due to COVID, Caleb Sanders and Luke Sanders could not attend the game. This was the first time in Counselors history a boys game was played without either of the Sanders boys.

Leading the Counselors was King Williams with 19 points and 6 rebounds in 13 minutes. Sun Michael finished with 18 points, 8 assists, and 8 rebounds. Chris Purnell finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

The PCA Paladins were led by Gabe McDonald, who finished with 21 points. Colyn Ericksen had 16 points and Drew Boggs drilled 5 three pointers to end with 15 points.

The Muddy River Counselors will face off against the PCA Paladins next week (Feb. 15) down in Slidell, LA.
