[RAYMOND, MS] The Muddy River Counselors are rolling, riding an 8-game winning streak after starting the season 5-4.
On Tuesday night, the Counselors set a new single-game scoring record with a 94-40 win over the Jackson Victors. Muddy River is now 8-0 on the season in conference play and have beaten both Hattiesburg and PCA twice. No one else can catch them for the No. 1 seed, ending PCA’s 3-year run as the league’s top regular season team.
Concerning the second seed, it will either be the Hattiesburg Forerunners or the PCA Paladins most likely. The PCA Paladins are the defending champions and just took a tough 21-point loss to the Counselors. They now are left wondering and hoping they can figure out away to topple them. Hattiesburg is still trying to find themselves with the addition of Brayden Dry. Dry and Barnes work well together, but they are still in search of the right formula to get over the hump.
The Counselors now lead all boys divisions in the MSAHA. As they took on Jackson, Muddy River faced off against the No. 1 seed of the 14U boys field in Jackson. The back-to-back defending champion Counselors are looking for a three-peat and they made good way towards that goal with a 46-31 win over the Victors.
The Muddy River Counselors have a strong chance of heading into the Gulf Coast District Tournament in Monroe with a 10-0 conference record and a 16-4 overall record, which would more than likely give them a favorable seed in the tournament, especially considering their 4-0 performance at the Tri-State Classic at the beginning of the month.
Muddy River has one more game remaining in 2023 as they will face the Central Hinds Cougars on the road. The Counselors lost the game last season by a score of 62-72.
That game will be live on Counselors TV on Dec. 21.
