Caleb Sanders Leads the Way with 25, Counselors Roll Past Titans

[Tupelo, MS] The Muddy River Counselors defeated the Tupelo Titans 75-49 to start out the season.

The celebrations were in the air as Tupelo Titans hosted the Muddy River Counselors in their season opener as well as their inaugural game in the MSAHA Conference. The Titans were in full attire as the homecoming court was presented during the pause between the two boys games for the evening; a 14U bout followed by 18U.

The Muddy River Counselors are looking to have a breakout year. With Chris Purnell and King Williams entering their senior year and the additions of new players on top of everyone returning, the Counselors have high hopes heading into their 2021-22 campaign.

Yet, the game started off slow. Tupelo led 2-1 three minutes into the contest. But that was the last the Titans would lead. Buckets from seniors Chris Purnell and King Williams pulled the lead out to 10-2, and Muddy River was off and running. Once Coach Willis Williams went to the bench, they began to build a nice lead.

Caleb Sanders came off the bench and dropped 25 points on a highly-efficient 10-15 shooting from the field with five three pointers. His career night came in just 18 minutes of play. Chris Purnell started off the season nicely with 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Counselors were able to show off their newfound depth that was lacking last season.

The Counselors cruised the rest of the way to the finish, even through the hot shooting of the Titans young guards. Both of the games (14UB, 18UB) are available on MSAHA League Pass.

The Counselors also prevailed in the 14U game, cruising to a 41-24 win.

The Muddy River Counselors (1-0) head to Ridgeland on Nov. 1 to take on cross-town opponent, the Jackson Victors. The Tupelo Titans (0-1) will host the Meridian Flyers (1-0) on Nov. 5.
